The latest UK defence news from Breaking Defence has just been released and it is good news for a change.
The UK Mod has just announced that it will be buying several thousand new NLAW shoulder launched anti tank missiles to replace the weapons donated to Ukraine in its war against Putin’s Russia.
The total order of the British/Swedish weapon is valued at £229 million ($280 million), and they will be built at the Thales Air Defence factory in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The NLAW weapon is a fire and forget weapon with a range of 800m,and has the ability to destroy heavy main battle tanks. The Ukrainians have been putting them to good use in Ukraine against the Russian tanks and vehicles. They were responsible for roughly 40% of the destruction of all Russian armour according to Business Insider.
It is said that the thousands of NLAWs donated by the UK were critical in the defence of Kyiv and Ukraine in the first stages of the war, and prevented the Russians from taking the capital as planned. This then eventually led to the collapse of Russian forces were are seeing today.
It is a truly awesome weapon with a get track record in battle, and it is great news that we are buying more to replace the ones donated to Ukraine in their fight against Putin and Russia.
Other great defence news released recently is our formal Tempest (GCAP) 6th generation fighter jet programme with Japan and Italy.
